Disc brake systems are widely used in most modern cars due to its effectiveness and superior performance compared to drum brakes. An integral part of the disc brake system is the brake rotor or brake discs. These are circular metallic plates that fit over the wheel hub and rotate along with the wheels. As the brake is applied, due to hydraulic pressure, the brake pads are compressed against the rotors. The friction between the rotor and brake pad surface causes the rotor and eventually the wheel to stop.

On January 11, 1961, Officine Meccaniche di Sombreno was created by Emilio Bombassei and Italo Breda, who became Brembo.
